About this dive site

This dive site is Hatsushima Island, Japan's only inhabited remote island in Shizuoka Prefecture, situated approximately 10 km off the coast of Atami. It is easily accessible via a 30-minute ferry ride from Atami. Divers have the flexibility to engage in both beach diving and boat diving, exploring its accessible depths. The site primarily offers natural reef formations that support a diverse array of marine life, rather than historical wrecks or unique geological structures. The marine life at Hatsushima is particularly rich in macro creatures, making it a prime location for macro photography. Divers can expect to encounter numerous species of nudibranchs and shrimp, showcasing intricate details. Larger benthic inhabitants include sightings of cat sharks and scorpion sharks, which can often be found resting on the seafloor. In the colder winter months, the site becomes notable for the appearance of unique 'danglers,' likely referring to lumpsuckers or similar cryptic fish, adding a special seasonal attraction. The best time to visit Hatsushima Island for divers keen on observing 'danglers' is during the winter season. The dive site's relatively shallow maximum depth of 20 meters and an average depth of 10 meters make it highly suitable for beginners and those looking for relaxed, extended bottom times. Its accessibility from the beach and varied shallow-water marine life also make it an accommodating location for both snorkelers and freedivers.
