About this dive site

This dive site, known as Komatsu, is nestled within a sheltered bay in Japan, accessible only by service boat from Kamiko Fishing Port. Entry is straightforward from a sandy beach area, gradually sloping into deeper water, making it ideal for confined water training. To the right (north) of the entry, divers will discover rocky formations, providing structure and habitat. Despite the name, the site's actual location is in Fukui Prefecture, not near the city of Komatsu. The marine environment is home to various bottom fish, grunts, damselfish, horse mackerel, chaga, scallops, wrasses, blenny fish, and sea slugs. Due to occasional ocean currents, divers may also spot yellowtails and butterflyfish. Schools of yellowtail and Spanish mackerel are sometimes observed passing through the area, heading towards nearby fixed nets. Thanks to its protected location within the bay, Komatsu is largely unaffected by adverse weather, offering consistent diving conditions. While no specific 'best time' is stated, the presence of migratory species suggests that seasonal variations in currents might enhance viewing opportunities for larger fish. Its shallow average depth and calm conditions make it excellent for beginners and perfect for snorkeling and freediving activities, offering a gentle introduction to Japan's coastal marine life.
