About this dive site

This dive site, Kurohae, also known as Black Fly, is designated as Site 5 within a National Park Special Protection Area. Located off the coast of Japan, it is renowned for its overwhelmingly large number of fish and condensed ocean scenery. Divers navigate across rocks, finding a hard coral colony to the north and a vibrant, large colony of soft corals along with nannyo goatfish to the south, offering distinct marine habitats within a single dive. There is no specific historical information or story provided about the site beyond its designation as a special protection area. Kurohae boasts an exceptional variety of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter numerous sizable species including snappers, groupers, scorpionfish, and large schools of rockfish. Pelagic species like amberjack and yellowtail are common, alongside regular sightings of turtles. The site also offers the thrilling possibility of encountering sharks and rays, while smaller, fascinating creatures such as frogfish and flatfish add to the diversity, creating a dynamic and thriving underwater ecosystem. Given that currents are often fast, the best time to visit Kurohae is on days when the tide is not moving and sea conditions are favorable, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience. While the maximum depth is 22 meters and average depth is 11 meters, the strong currents mean it is most suitable for advanced divers. Snorkelers and freedivers can explore the shallower coral formations during calm conditions, but should be mindful of the variable currents. This site is a highlight for wide-angle photographers due to its vast schools of fish and expansive coral formations.
