About this dive site

This dive site is located on Mikomoto Island, a small, uninhabited island situated approximately 10 kilometers off the southeast coast of the Izu Peninsula in Japan. The island holds significant historical importance as it marks a crucial navigational point for ships traveling from the west toward Tokyo Bay. Its waters are characterized by numerous reefs and strong currents, leading to its long-standing reputation as a challenging but rewarding location. A prominent feature is Mikomotojima Lighthouse, one of the oldest stone lighthouses still in operation, playing a vital role in guiding vessels into Sagami Bay and Tokyo Bay. The island’s position on the border between Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay also makes it subject to strong tidal influences due to its proximity to the Kuroshio Current, a major oceanic current. This creates dynamic conditions, attracting experienced fishermen and anglers seeking big game fishing opportunities. Visibility can vary depending on the currents and tides. The island itself consists solely of reefs.
