About this dive site

This dive site, Okinose W-Arch, is a unique underwater location situated on the Etchu-Miyazaki Coast, approximately 1 kilometer offshore in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It is famed for its exceedingly rare dual arches, a topographical feature seldom found on the Sea of Japan side. Local legend imbues the site with historical significance, believing an ancient shrine once stood here, designating it a spiritual 'power spot.' Divers can navigate around and through these natural arches, which lie at an average depth of about 10 meters. The Okinose W-Arch boasts a vibrant and diverse marine ecosystem. Divers can encounter a wide array of fish species, including large specimens like big snappers, amberjack, yellowtail, and sunfish, alongside peppers, kijihata, aohata, and horse mackerel. Smaller life is also abundant, with various snappers, minnows, and distinct nudibranch species such as yellow-bellied, white, and Sagami nudibranchs, complementing the colorful sea fans. The best time to experience the Okinose W-Arch is from spring through summer when the water clarity is at its peak, offering excellent visibility. While highly recommended for its unique geology and rich marine life, divers should be prepared for occasional strong currents, making it an ideal spot for intermediate divers. Both snorkelers and freedivers will also find the relatively shallow depths and abundant life appealing, especially around the impressive double arches.
