About this dive site
This dive site, known as Osaki Batfish Reef or Osaki Akakuri no Nebu, is a vibrant coral reef located off Ishigaki Island, Japan. The site is characterized by prominent 'roots' or bommies that rise from the seafloor, providing rich structure for an abundance of marine life. Dives typically involve exploring these features, winding through their contours, and observing the bustling ecosystem around them.
The waters teem with large schools of red clownfish, numerous small reef fish, and rich macro life, including various species of nudibranchs and shrimp. Larger pelagic species are also commonly sighted, such as giant trevally, dogtooth tuna, green turtles, snappers, bluefin trevally, giant jacks, yellowfin tuna, and barracuda, alongside healthy corals.
While specific seasonal highlights for pelagics may vary, the site generally offers excellent diving year-round due to its diverse resident marine population. Its moderate depths make it highly suitable for both scuba divers and freedivers, with plenty of activity and beauty to appreciate in the shallower sections, making it a rewarding experience for all interests.
