About this dive site

This dive site, Owase, is situated on the eastern side of Japan's Kii Peninsula, offering convenient access from both the Kansai and Chubu regions. The underwater landscape is characterized by a complex rias-style coast, featuring numerous islands that serve as primary points of interest for divers. Both beach and boat entry options are available, allowing for diverse exploration strategies within the maximum depth of 20 meters and an average depth of 10 meters. Navigation around the islands and their complex topography provides varied dive profiles. The marine life at Owase is abundant, encompassing a wide array of shore fish species such as large yellowtail, mejina, black-eyed fish, and impressive large groupers. During the warmer months from summer to autumn, the site also becomes home to vibrant tropical fish, including clownfish, honeycomb damselfish, hornbills, and bluefin damselfish. Encounters with larger marine animals are also possible, with sightings of sting sharks, cat sharks, large stingrays, and sea turtles. The best time to experience the rich biodiversity of Owase, particularly for tropical fish sightings, is from summer to autumn. This period likely offers warmer waters and clearer conditions, making it ideal for both scuba divers and freedivers. With its moderate depths and varied marine encounters, Owase is suitable for divers of all levels, though awareness of potential currents in the complex island terrain is advisable for an optimal experience.
