This dive site, Sakihonbu, locally known as Gorilla Chop due to its distinctive rock formations, is situated in Motobu, Okinawa, Japan. It is an ideal location for both novice divers and those seeking experience dives, thanks to its shallow depths. Underwater navigation is straightforward, characterized by unique rock structures and vast expanses of white sand. The site is known for its calm conditions, being naturally sheltered from northerly winds.
The marine life at Sakihonbu is diverse and vibrant, featuring a rich ecosystem of soft corals alongside white sandy patches. Divers can expect to encounter various fish species, including numerous clownfish, spiny dogfish, and fascinating symbiotic gobies. The site is also home to unique invertebrates such as yibarakanzashi, kanzashi hermit crabs, and large bear clams. During winter months, the site becomes particularly active with impressive schools of mijun and Formosan landlocked salmon.
The Sakihonbu dive site offers excellent diving opportunities year-round due to its consistently calm conditions. The best time to visit is essentially anytime, as it is sheltered from harsh weather. Its shallow average depth of 5 meters and maximum depth of 11 meters make it perfect for extended bottom times. It is highly suitable for both snorkeling and freediving, with abundant marine life visible even from the surface. Divers are advised to appreciate the unique rock formations and look closely for macro life hidden within the corals and sand.
