Sanbondake

This dive site, officially known as Onohara Island or Sanbondake, is an uninhabited reef located approximately an hour's boat ride from Miyakejima, Japan. It is renowned for its highly dynamic conditions, primarily characterized by strong currents, making it exclusively suitable for advanced divers. The dive here is a complete drift style, where divers are carried along by the current, experiencing one of Miyakejima's most exhilarating underwater environments. Sanbondake is a vibrant hub for marine life, particularly known for its large schools of fish and impressive pelagic encounters. Divers can expect to see huge schools of sea squirts and fish known locally as hawks and swallows. The site is a hotspot for migratory fish, including the impressive giant campachi. Furthermore, it offers thrilling shark sightings, with frequent encounters with hammerhead sharks and the occasional appearance of a tiger shark, making it a prime location for big animal action. Due to the challenging conditions, diving at Sanbondake is only possible when sea conditions and currents are favorable, requiring careful planning. It is an exceptional site for experienced divers seeking high-octane drift dives and spectacular pelagic and schooling fish encounters.
