About this dive site
This dive site, Yamada Sunachi, also known as Yamada Sandy Area, is located just five minutes from Kaneku Port in Okinawa. It features a unique sandy seabed with intriguing antlion-like formations and several areas with transplanted coral structures. A notable historical detail is the disappearance of a rare tomato clownfish, stolen along with its anemone in 1990, a story that adds a poignant layer to the site's past. Navigation is generally straightforward, focusing on exploring the sandy bottom and the distinct vibrant finger coral cluster thriving to the south.
The marine life here, while missing its once-famous tomato clownfish, remains vibrant, especially within the thriving finger coral clusters. Divers can encounter various snapper and damselfish species among the corals. The site is particularly renowned for hosting rare and elusive creatures such as the Yasha goby and the pygmy seadragon, making it a favorite for macro enthusiasts. The transplanted corals also provide habitat for numerous smaller invertebrates and fish, enhancing biodiversity.
While specific peak times aren't mentioned, Okinawa generally offers good diving conditions year-round, with warmer waters during summer and autumn. This shallow site is ideal for extended bottom times, perfect for both scuba divers to search for the elusive macro life and freedivers to explore the coral formations and sandy terrain. Its calm, shallow nature makes it an excellent choice for beginner divers and those looking to refine their underwater photography skills.
