About this dive site
This dive site, Yonehara Reef, is situated off Kawadaira in the northern part of Ishigaki Island, Japan. It is exclusively accessed by boat. The site features a prominent coral shelf at a depth of 5-6 meters, which then drops into a sandy area reaching 20-25 meters. This sandy expanse hosts three coral 'roots' densely populated with magnificent table and eddy corals, providing a rich and intricate underwater landscape for exploration.
The reef is a thriving ecosystem, densely covered with an array of branch and table corals. Divers can anticipate encountering various fascinating marine species, including the distinctive red-headed flounder, numerous Debus damselfish, and colorful butterflyfish gracefully navigating the reef. The shallower coral shelf is particularly abundant with damselfish, creating dynamic displays of small marine life.
Yonehara Reef offers excellent conditions for both scuba divers and freedivers, thanks to its relatively shallow depths and rich biodiversity. Its accessible coral shelf also makes it a fantastic spot for snorkelers. It is best visited during periods of good weather, and the site is highly recommended for beginners and those seeking a relaxed dive to appreciate the natural beauty of Ishigaki's coral reefs.
