This dive site, Salang Jetty, surprisingly transforms a man-made structure into a vibrant underwater ecosystem. Over time, discarded debris from human activity has accumulated, forming an artificial reef beneath the jetty. This unique habitat offers shelter and food, attracting a diverse array of marine life. Divers can navigate along the jetty pilings and explore the various nooks and crannies of the accumulated debris, which now serves as a complex reef structure.
The site is teeming with life, making it a fantastic spot for spotting both hunters and their prey. Shoals of juvenile fish seek refuge here, while predators like barracudas, trevallies, and garfishes are frequently observed. The artificial reef supports a rich macro environment, home to frogfish, various moray eels, cuttlefish, thousands of shrimps and crabs, pipefish, flatworms, nudibranchs, and sea slugs.
The best time to visit Salang Jetty generally aligns with Tioman Island's main diving season from March to October, when conditions are typically calmest and visibility good. Its shallow depth and rich biodiversity make it an excellent site for macro photography enthusiasts and a perfect training ground for beginner divers. Freedivers will also find the calm, shallow waters and abundant life highly appealing, offering prolonged viewing opportunities.
