About this dive site

This dive site, known as Airport Beyru, is located on the southeast reef near the Maldives International Airport, just a 10-minute boat ride from Hulhumale'. The site features a gentle coral slope commencing at just 2 meters, leading to a prominent reef edge between 3-5 meters. From there, the reef continues to slope down beyond 30 meters, offering varied depths for different experience levels. There's no specific historical narrative provided, but its proximity to the airport makes it a convenient and frequently visited local site. Underwater navigation is straightforward following the reef's contour. Divers can expect to encounter an abundance of marine life, including large schools of fusiliers, graceful bannerfish, and various moray eels. The site is particularly known for its pelagic encounters, with frequent sightings of eagle rays, blacktip reef sharks, and white tip reef sharks. Other notable residents include surgeonfish and the impressive Napoleon wrasse, indicative of a healthy and diverse reef ecosystem. The best time to visit the Maldives generally aligns with the dry season (December to May) for optimal visibility and calm conditions, though diving is possible year-round. This site is excellent for both scuba divers and freedivers due to its accessible shallow areas and deeper reef sections. Snorkelers can enjoy the vibrant shallow reef top. Divers should be prepared for potentially moderate currents, common in the Maldives, which can enhance pelagic encounters. It's an excellent site for wide-angle photography due to the schools of fish and larger animals.
