About this dive site
This dive site, Bathala Maga Khan Thila, holds a legendary status among divers in the North Ari Atoll. Strategically positioned at the entrance of the Bathala channel and facing the open ocean, it creates ideal conditions for diverse marine life. The reef structure begins at approximately 7 meters on its southern side and descends to about 30 meters, presenting an intriguing underwater topography for exploration. No specific historical accounts or stories are provided for the dive site, but its reputation as a prime pelagic spot is well-established.
The thila is particularly famous for its spectacular big animal encounters, notably the presence of Grey Reefsharks and magnificent Napoleonfish. Divers can also anticipate sightings of a wide array of schooling reef fish, various snapper and grouper species, as well as an abundance of vibrant hard and soft corals covering the reef slopes and ledges.
While diving is excellent year-round, the peak season for pelagic action and strong currents, which bring exceptional visibility, typically runs from December to May. Due to the potential for strong currents, this site is best suited for advanced divers comfortable with drift diving. It is highly recommended to carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) and a reef hook for safety and positioning.
