About this dive site

This dive site, Beriyan Kuda Thila (BKT), is a renowned submerged pinnacle located in the Maldives, specifically within the Baa Atoll. It is characterized by dynamic currents, making it a dive site primarily reserved for experienced divers or best visited during periods of low current. The thila rises to a minimum depth of 16 meters, with its south side featuring a distinct plateau at 25 meters before dramatically dropping off to depths exceeding 40 meters. There is no specific historical account or story associated with the formation of this natural reef structure. Beriyan Kuda Thila serves as an important cleaning station, particularly attracting Gray Reef Sharks and, on rare occasions, Silvertip Sharks. Beyond these impressive pelagics, divers can frequently encounter graceful Eagle Rays. During the appropriate seasons, the site offers the thrilling possibility of sightings of magnificent Manta Rays or Mobulas. Furthermore, the thila's structure and environment support a diverse array of smaller marine life, including various reef fish and invertebrates, making it rich in both macro and wide-angle photographic opportunities. The optimal time to visit Beriyan Kuda Thila for encounters with its larger pelagic inhabitants, such as mantas and mobulas, aligns with their seasonal aggregations in the Maldives, typically influenced by monsoon patterns. Due to the variable and often strong currents, divers should possess advanced certification and experience in drift diving techniques. This site is not suitable for snorkeling or freediving given the challenging current conditions and significant depths involved.
