About this dive site

This dive site, Bodu Gaa, translates to 'big block' in Dhivehi, a name it proudly bears due to the prominent large coral block that defines its character. Located conveniently at the end of Kuramathi island, near its sandbank, this block sits just 2 meters below the surface. Divers typically descend from this reef-fish-enveloped block, navigating down to a sandy plateau that stretches out at a maximum depth of 23 meters, where numerous other coral blocks are scattered across the floor, creating an interesting underwater landscape. The initial shallow coral block acts as a vibrant hub, teeming with diverse reef fish, indicative of a healthy Maldivian coral ecosystem. Expect to encounter various species of colorful reef fish, likely including parrotfish, snappers, groupers, and possibly some smaller invertebrates nestled within the corals. The deeper sandy plateau, adorned with additional coral formations, also offers habitats for different bottom dwellers and small fish, alongside a variety of hard and soft corals. Bodu Gaa is suitable for diving throughout the year, like most Maldivian sites, offering consistent warm waters and excellent visibility. The site's dual nature, with a shallow, active reef top and a deeper, explorative plateau, makes it a great spot for both wide-angle photography of the vibrant reef and macro photography of smaller creatures hiding among the coral blocks. It's an ideal location for divers of all experience levels, with the shallow areas perfect for beginners and snorkelers, while the deeper sections provide more to explore for intermediate divers.
