About this dive site

This dive site, Bushy East Channel, is located on the eastern corner of the Maakandu channel in the Maldives. It is primarily experienced as a drift dive, following the currents, which can be either incoming or outgoing. Underwater, divers will find a sandy slope extending from 5 to 25 meters on the inside of the channel, dotted with attractive coral blocks. As one approaches the channel corner, the reef flattens out at approximately 22 meters, transitioning into expansive fields of healthy hard corals. There is no specific history or story provided for this natural channel. The channel is renowned for its diverse marine life, particularly large pelagic species. Divers can expect encounters with mantas, barracuda, napoleons, eagle rays, and turtles. Humphead parrotfish are also commonly sighted. The healthy hard coral fields contribute to a vibrant ecosystem, providing habitat for various reef fish and other smaller invertebrates, though the site is most celebrated for its larger inhabitants. The best time to visit will depend on current conditions and manta activity, which can fluctuate with seasons and tides. Keep an eye out for mantas using the channel as a thoroughfare. For freedivers, the site offers excellent opportunities to encounter large marine life at manageable depths, though current awareness is crucial. Divers should be prepared for drift diving and potentially variable currents. The highlights include the abundant healthy coral landscape and the chance for significant big fish encounters.
