About this dive site
This dive site, Ellaidhoo Thila, is a submerged pinnacle located north of the resort island Ellaidhoo, adjacent to the Ellaidhoo Channel. The top of the reef starts at approximately 8 meters and descends to a sandy bottom at over 30 meters. Divers typically navigate the thila by drifting with the current, making a quick descent crucial due to variable current strength. The south side is particularly notable for its numerous overhangs.
The thila is teeming with marine life, especially when currents are present. Divers can expect to encounter large schools of fish, alongside apex predators such as grey reef sharks and white tip sharks. The vibrant reef structure is adorned with beautiful gorgonian fans and black bush corals, providing excellent photographic opportunities for both wide-angle and macro enthusiasts.
While specific best times to visit are not detailed by month or season, the dive site is known to be most active with big pelagics when the currents are strong. Divers should be prepared for variable conditions and ensure they are comfortable with drift diving techniques. The accessible top reef and various depths also make it suitable for freedivers and snorkelers, though strong currents should always be considered.
