About this dive site

This dive site, Fan Reef, is an accessible and popular wall dive located just south of Kuramathi, a mere two-minute boat ride from the resort’s jetty. It is renowned as an easy wall dive, making it perfect for beginners and Open Water Divers. Navigation is straightforward along the wall, with much of the most captivating marine life and coral formations found in shallower depths. There is no specific historical background or story mentioned for this particular dive site. Fan Reef is celebrated for its rich biodiversity. Divers can frequently spot Whitetip sharks sleeping in the bays, alongside Blacktip sharks patrolling the area. Deeper along the wall, the site lives up to its name, transforming into a magnificent 'Fan Coral paradise' adorned with vibrant gorgonians. Common sightings also include graceful Eagle Rays, impressive schools of Barracudas, and majestic Napoleons, making for exciting encounters with larger marine species. The site is considered excellent for snorkeling and freediving due to the abundance of marine life visible at shallow depths. While enjoyable year-round, the best time to visit for optimal conditions generally aligns with the Maldives' dry season, from November to April, which offers the best visibility and calmest waters. Fan Reef is highly recommended for underwater photographers interested in both wide-angle shots of the reef landscape and close-up encounters with sharks and rays, providing a rewarding experience for divers of all experience levels.
