About this dive site
This dive site is located on the north side of a narrow channel near the Gangehi island resort in the Maldives. It's known for its dynamic underwater environment, influenced by two types of currents: incoming and outgoing. Divers typically navigate along the channel, starting near the top at 5 meters and descending to a bottom around 33 meters, although the maximum recreational depth is 22 meters. The channel's unique topography creates an ideal setting for exciting drift dives.
The marine life here is exceptional, particularly during strong incoming currents. Divers can expect encounters with impressive pelagic species such as schools of Grey reef sharks, majestic Eagle rays, and large schools of big eye jackfish. Sting rays are also frequently observed. A significant highlight is the almost 90% chance of encountering Zebra sharks, making it a prime location for shark enthusiasts.
The best time to visit Gangehi Kandu North for spectacular marine encounters is during a strong incoming current, which attracts the larger pelagic species. Divers should be comfortable with drift diving and managing variable current conditions. While the top reef at 5 meters offers shallower exploration, strong currents make it less suitable for general snorkeling. Experienced freedivers, however, may find the depths and marine life appealing, provided they are proficient in current management.
