About this dive site
This dive site, Hulangu Kandu, is situated in a channel just north of Hilton Maldives Amingiri, at the corner of the outer reef. Renowned as one of Maldives' top 10 dive sites, it offers dynamic reef structures and is particularly famous for its thrilling shark encounters. The dive is typically a drift dive, best experienced during an incoming current, which brings large pelagics into the channel.
The main attraction at Hulangu Kandu is the abundant marine life, especially large schools of Grey Reef Sharks and White Tip Reef Sharks. Divers can witness these majestic predators circling in the deep waters. Beyond the sharks, the site promises 'anything Maldives has to offer,' implying a rich variety of reef fish, corals, and other common Maldivian marine species.
The best time to visit Hulangu Kandu is during an incoming current, which triggers the spectacular shark action. Due to strong currents and deep water encounters, this site is primarily suited for advanced divers with experience in drift diving. While the average depth is 12 meters, the key shark action happens deeper, and currents demand careful attention, making it less suitable for snorkeling or inexperienced freediving.
