About this dive site

This dive site, Iru Thila, is a distinctive small, free-standing reef situated on the west side of North Male Atoll in the Maldives. The reef's topography is notable, starting at a top reef depth of 7 meters and then dropping down to approximately 30 meters all around. Its strategic location close to a channel ensures a healthy exchange of nutrient-rich waters, contributing to a vibrant ecosystem. While the reef's full depth extends beyond, the maximum depth for a typical dive at this specific site is often set around 16 meters, making it accessible to intermediate divers. The highlight of Iru Thila is its spectacular display of huge black coral trees, which are a major draw for photographers and marine enthusiasts. Beyond the corals, the nutrient-rich currents attract a diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter various reef fish species such as snappers, fusiliers, sweetlips, and parrotfish. The channel proximity also increases the likelihood of sightings of larger pelagic species, including reef sharks and possibly different types of rays, benefiting from the plentiful food supply. The Maldives generally offers excellent diving conditions year-round, though specific seasons might be better for particular pelagic sightings. For divers, Iru Thila is best enjoyed by being mindful of the variable currents, which can range from mild to strong, especially near the channel. The top reef at 7 meters makes it an appealing spot for both snorkelers and freedivers, offering shallow access to a vibrant part of the reef and its celebrated black corals.
