About this dive site
This dive site, Maarikilu Caves, offers an exhilarating drift dive experience starting in a tranquil small bay before transitioning to a dramatic steep wall. Divers navigate from a shallow 4-meter slope down to 22 meters, where a small drop-off marks the deeper section. The dive is characterized by its dynamic currents, typical of a Maldivian drift, and the intriguing topography of its caves, providing a unique exploration opportunity.
The marine life here is exceptionally rich and diverse. Divers can expect to encounter huge groupers, vibrant perch, majestic stingrays, and impressive Napoleons. The site is also teeming with smaller creatures such as various snails, numerous moray eels, shrimps, and lobsters, all set against a backdrop of colorful corals. From January to April, there's a significant chance to observe the wonderful manta rays passing by.
The prime time to visit Maarikilu Caves is between January and April, specifically for the high probability of manta ray encounters. While suitable for experienced divers comfortable with drift conditions, the shallow bay entrance also offers aspects that might appeal to those newer to current diving with proper guidance. Freedivers and snorkelers can enjoy the shallower parts of the bay where marine life is also abundant, particularly during manta season.
