About this dive site

This dive site, Mahala, is located on the inside of the channel entrance of Kuda Kandu in the Maldives. It is renowned for its dynamic conditions, frequently experiencing strong currents, and is therefore best dived during slack or incoming current periods for optimal safety and enjoyment. The top reef is primarily characterized by robust rock formations, and the most engaging diving experience is found between 15 and 25 meters, where the vibrant reef life flourishes. There is no specific historical information or story associated with this natural channel dive site. Divers at Mahala can expect to encounter an array of colorful marine life. The reef is adorned with striking gorgonians and distinct mushroom coral blocks, providing a picturesque underwater landscape. Large pelagic species commonly sighted include nurse sharks, whitetip sharks, and majestic stingrays often resting on the sandy bottom. Schools of fusiliers, solitary napoleon wrasse, and various species of nudibranchs contribute to the site's rich biodiversity. The best time to visit Mahala is when current conditions are favorable, specifically during slack or incoming current, to ensure a more relaxed and immersive dive. Due to the potential for strong currents, this site is highly recommended for advanced divers who possess experience in drift diving and current management. While the maximum depth of 22 meters makes it suitable for experienced freedivers, the unpredictable currents necessitate careful planning and advanced skills. Snorkeling is not advised due to the strong currents and the primary attractions being at deeper depths.
