About this dive site
This dive site, known in Divehi as Thinga Thila or Lion Seamount, is a celebrated dive destination in the Maldives. It gets its name from the notable presence of large lionfish, particularly on its southeast side, offering a unique photographic opportunity. The reef begins at a shallow 3 meters and gently descends to a seabed depth of around 30 meters, though the maximum recommended diving depth is 21 meters, providing a straightforward and enjoyable dive profile.
The vibrant marine ecosystem at Thinga Thila is teeming with life. Divers are frequently greeted by schools of hundreds of bannerfish, along with various species of shrimps and moray eels found among the coral formations. The eponymous big lionfishes are a key highlight, creating a captivating spectacle, especially for macro and wide-angle photographers alike.
As a 'treasure box' for explorers and photographers, Thinga Thila offers continuous points of interest throughout the dive. While specific seasonal highlights aren't detailed, the Maldives typically offers excellent diving conditions year-round, making it a reliable spot for marine encounters. Its shallow start and gentle slope make it ideal for both scuba divers of all levels and freedivers seeking diverse underwater exploration.
