About this dive site

This dive site, located at Cozumel’s southernmost reef and known as Maracaibo, presents an exceptional experience for experienced divers. The area features a dramatic sheer wall that plunges to considerable depths beyond recreational limits. Strong currents are a consistent feature, requiring swift and carefully planned descents to remain within safe depth ranges and maintain group cohesion. A distinctive landmark is ‘The Arch’, a remarkable semicircle situated approximately 115 feet below the surface, found shortly after navigating a large descending crevice. Within this area, hidden chambers offer opportunities for exploration, while pelagic life is frequently observed. The seabed includes sandy patches where sharks may rest alongside lobsters and moray eels concealed within crevices. Playful wrasses add to the vibrant marine ecosystem. This challenging site demands solid diving skills and an understanding of current dynamics, but rewards those willing to embrace the experience with a glimpse into a largely undisturbed underwater landscape.
