This dive site, known as Blinde Dam (Blind Dam), earns its name from the intriguing phenomenon where the dam structure becomes completely submerged and visually disappears beneath the surface during high tide. Primarily recommended as a boat dive due to a considerable walk required for shore access, it offers a unique underwater navigation experience exploring the contours of the submerged dam. The site's relative remoteness and infrequent diving activity have contributed to its remarkably unspoilt character.
Despite being in temperate waters, the marine life here is surprisingly vibrant and attractive. Divers can anticipate encountering various species of temperate fish, a healthy population of crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, and diverse invertebrates such as anemones and starfish. The undisturbed nature of the site also promotes a rich growth of marine plants, making it an excellent location for macro photography and observing smaller details of the ecosystem.
The best time to visit Blinde Dam is during periods of calmer tides to fully appreciate its undisturbed beauty and ensure comfortable diving conditions. Divers should be prepared for typical Netherlands water temperatures and bring appropriate thermal protection. For freedivers and snorkelers, the shallow maximum depth of 10 meters and average depth of 5 meters make it an ideal location to explore the submerged dam structure and observe the abundant, unspoilt life from the surface or with breath-hold.
