This dive site, known as Halverwege (meaning 'halfway'), is strategically located between Kulkenol and the iconic Zeeland Bridge within the Oosterschelde estuary. It is primarily known as a drift dive, where divers can enter the water during or after the turn of low tide and be carried by the current towards the Zeeland Bridge. While less known than its famous neighbor, the site offers a unique perspective on the local marine environment and requires careful planning around tidal movements to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The marine life here is diverse and vibrant, closely resembling that found around the Zeeland Bridge. The main attraction is the abundant presence of Cuttlefish, which can be observed year-round in various stages of their life cycle. Besides Cuttlefish, divers can expect to encounter typical Oosterschelde fauna such as various species of crabs, lobsters, anemones, small fish, and other invertebrates thriving on the silty and sandy bottom.
Halverwege can be visited throughout the year, with the Cuttlefish being a consistent highlight. For divers, it is crucial to plan dives according to the tidal schedule, as the site is best experienced as a drift dive with the outgoing current. Alternatively, diving around slack tide offers a more static experience. Freedivers can also enjoy the site's shallow depths and observe the rich macro life, but should also be mindful of the currents and cold water.
