This dive site, Kulkenol, is at the tip of a T-shaped breakwater near Zierikzee harbor. Access requires a demanding kilometer walk from the Zeelandbrug. Underwater, divers primarily follow the breakwater blocks. The location experiences very strong, often variable currents as water is diverted towards the shipping channel, creating challenging conditions.
Kulkenol is renowned for its abundant macro life, especially a large variety of nudibranchs found thriving on the breakwater blocks, particularly in spring. Divers may also observe small fish species common to the North Sea, such as gobies and blennies, along with various crustaceans and anemones living on this artificial reef structure.
The best time to visit Kulkenol for macro photography is during the spring when nudibranchs are most prolific. Due to the very strong and often variable currents, and its proximity to boat traffic in the shipping channel, this site is strictly for experienced, advanced divers comfortable with challenging conditions. Snorkeling and freediving are not recommended here due to safety concerns related to currents and vessel movements.
