About this dive site

This dive site, formerly known as Cargill’s Pier and now referred to as The Mole, is a man-made rock wall constructed to protect the harbor entrance from siltation. Located in the southern South Island, this area offers a diverse diving experience. It's suitable for divers of various skill levels looking for encounters with marine life, including seahorses, nudibranchs, carpet sharks, telescope fish, and sevengill sharks. There is also the possibility of observing New Zealand Hooker sea lions. The site provides access to wrecks and pelagic species. Visibility typically ranges from 3 to 6 meters (10 to 20 feet) on average, with better conditions reaching up to 10 meters (30 feet) on favorable days. The maximum depth is 30 meters (98 feet), although most dives are conducted at depths between 10 and 15 meters (33 to 49 feet).
