About this dive site

This dive site features the HMNZS Wellington, a Leander-class frigate scuttled in 2005 to create an artificial reef. Located only five minutes from Island Bay, it offers a fascinating dive experience for divers of all levels, though guidance is recommended for those with limited experience. The wreck itself has been scattered across two main areas, meaning one dive won’t reveal its entirety. Explorers can examine the bow section, admiring the intact forward guns and anchors – while experienced divers may venture inside. The stern section presents a different challenge, offering glimpses of the bridge and even the Captain's toilet. Further exploration reveals an engine, a helipad, and various cabins. The area is teeming with marine life, including Nudibranchs, Crayfish, schooling Terakihi, and Blue Moki. The maximum depth here is 22 meters, with visibility ranging from 2 to 12 meters on average.
