This dive site, Gilutungan Marine Sanctuary, is located around Gilutungan Island, a short 30-minute banka boat ride from Mactan Island in the Philippines. It is renowned for its protected marine environment, offering a vibrant underwater experience across extensive coral reefs and sea grass meadows. The site offers relatively easy navigation, generally following the reef contours, making it accessible for various skill levels. The sanctuary status ensures the preservation of its natural beauty, preventing overfishing and habitat destruction.
Divers and snorkelers here are consistently thrilled by the presence of large pelagic species, particularly impressive giant trevally that patrol the reef. Another highlight is the resident school of orbicular batfish, which often congregates in large numbers. The healthy coral reefs host a myriad of smaller reef fish, invertebrates, and various types of hard and soft corals, alongside significant sea grass meadows that serve as important nursery grounds for marine life.
The best time to visit Gilutungan Marine Sanctuary is generally during the dry season (November to May) when visibility is at its peak and sea conditions are calmer, though diving is possible year-round. It's an excellent destination for both divers and freedivers due to its manageable depths and rich marine biodiversity. Snorkelers will also find the shallow reef areas incredibly rewarding. Divers should be mindful of boat traffic, especially near the mooring areas, and always respect the sanctuary rules to protect its pristine environment.
