This dive site, known as Arco do Cavaco, is located approximately 15 minutes by boat from Ponta Delgada Marina in the Azores, Portugal. It is renowned for its distinctive underwater volcanic landscape, featuring impressive arcs and finger-shaped walls that line the coastline. The site is particularly well-suited for drift dives, allowing divers to explore the unique topography with the current. Its name, Arco do Cavaco, is playfully attributed to its proximity to a local chocolate factory.
The rich marine life here includes a vibrant array of smaller species such as Canary Damsel, Sea Bream, Rainbow wrasse, Ornate Wrasse, and Azores Chromis. Divers can also spot various blenny species, including Rock-pool Blenny, Rusty blenny, Redlip blenny, and Black-faced blenny, alongside Red scorpion fish and Madeira rockfish, all thriving within the volcanic structures.
The best time to visit Arco do Cavaco is typically during the warmer months from late spring to early autumn (June to October) when sea conditions are generally calmer. Its shallow to moderate depths make it an excellent location for both scuba diving and freediving, with the volcanic arcs providing interesting swim-throughs and photographic opportunities. Divers should be prepared for drift diving and should always check local current conditions.
