This dive site, known as Cannons, is located in Engrade Grande, near Ilhéu de Baixo or Cal, an islet off Porto Santo. It features three historical cannons and some ammunition scattered on the seabed, remnants likely from a past maritime event or a historical defense position. Divers can explore these artifacts at an average depth of around 10 meters, dropping to a maximum of 21 meters, and also visit a small cave nearby, adding an exciting dimension to the dive.
The marine life at Cannons includes a variety of small fish that are always present, making for vibrant observations. Within the small cave, divers might encounter schools of jacks, creating dynamic underwater scenes. With a bit of luck, rays can also be spotted cruising in the area, adding a thrilling element to the dive experience.
The best time to visit this dive site for optimal conditions is generally during the warmer months, when water temperatures are more comfortable and visibility is typically good. It is suitable for Open Water divers who are comfortable with the maximum depth and have some experience or guidance for navigating a small cave environment. Freedivers will also find the site appealing, with its average depth of 10 meters providing ample opportunity for exploration of the cannons and shallower parts of the cave on a single breath.
