This dive site, known as Prison Break, is a natural reef system located off the coast of São Miguel Island, Portugal. It is characterized by two parallel rock walls that run along the coastline, forming a protected channel. This unique topography offers a safe and calm environment, making it an excellent location for divers of all experience levels to explore its vibrant ecosystem. The site requires careful navigation between the walls to fully appreciate its structure and hidden gems, offering an engaging underwater experience.
Divers at Prison Break can encounter a rich variety of marine species. Common sightings include forkbeard, the elusive dwarf tonguefish, wide-eyed founder, and the colorful cleaver wrasse. Larger inhabitants like the majestic eagle ray, various stingrays (including the round stingray), and grey mullet can also be spotted. Smaller, interesting creatures such as lizardfish, red mullet, and the charismatic seahorse add to the biodiversity, offering great opportunities for macro photography.
The protected nature of Prison Break means it can generally be dived year-round, with warmer waters and better visibility typically found during the summer and early autumn months (June to October). This site is particularly ideal for beginner divers due to its shallow depths and calm conditions, while advanced divers can enjoy exploring the crevices and searching for macro life. Freedivers and snorkelers will also find the site highly rewarding, given its accessible average depth and abundant marine life near the surface.
