This dive site explores the MV Reijin, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship that tragically ran aground on April 16, 1988, near Leixões, Portugal. The incident was attributed to an unbalanced cargo after unloading 250 cars. Lying at a maximum depth of 12 meters, the wreck offers an easily accessible and intriguing historical site for divers to explore the remnants of this maritime event.
The MV Reijin has transformed into an artificial reef, teeming with diverse marine life. Divers can expect to encounter various fish species such as Sea Bass, Sea Bream, and Golden Bream. The wreck also provides a home for fascinating cephalopods like Octopus, Cuttlefish, and Squid, alongside resident Conger eels and Rays. Vibrant Spongy Coral and many other local species contribute to a rich underwater ecosystem.
Given its shallow nature, the Reijin wreck is an excellent spot for beginner divers, snorkeling, and freediving. The site is generally best visited during the warmer months from late spring to early autumn for optimal visibility and water temperatures. Its well-preserved structure and abundant marine life make it an ideal location for underwater photography, offering both wide-angle shots of the wreck and macro opportunities with its smaller inhabitants.
