This dive site features the U-1277, a historic German submarine from World War II. Located off Cabo do Mundo, north-west of Oporto and easily accessible from Leixões marina, the wreck rests on a sandy bottom at 31 meters, lying on its port side at approximately a 45-degree angle with the bow pointing southeast. Navigation around the wreck allows divers to explore a significant piece of wartime history.
Many species of marine life inhabit the U-1277 wreck. Divers can observe schools of pout, octopus, crabs, conger eels, and lobster, finding shelter and food around the structure. The hull is also covered in various anemones, and opportunities for macro photography are abundant, revealing smaller creatures and intricate details.
While specific best times to visit are not provided, general diving in Portugal's North Atlantic benefits from calmer seas and better visibility during late spring to early autumn. Divers should be prepared for potentially cooler water temperatures. Freedivers with appropriate experience can also enjoy exploring the upper parts of the wreck, given its average depth of 15 meters.
