About this dive site

This dive site is the submerged village of Vilarinho das Furnas, now resting beneath the waters of a reservoir in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Navigation is straightforward, as the village's structures are relatively intact and provide clear landmarks. The history is fascinating, as the village was intentionally flooded to create the reservoir, leaving behind a unique and poignant underwater landscape. The ruins of houses, streets, and even a church create an eerie yet captivating setting for a dive.

The marine life, while not abundant in large predators, offers a pleasing variety of smaller species. Largemouth bass and perch are common sightings, and during the summer months, water snakes may also be observed. Batrachians (amphibians) like frogs and newts can also be found amongst the submerged structures, adding a unique element to the dive.

The best time to visit is during the summer months when water visibility is typically clearest and the water snakes are more likely to appear. For freedivers, the shallow depth makes this an ideal location for exploring the village ruins. Divers should be mindful of the submerged structures to avoid accidental contact, but the overall conditions are suitable for relaxed exploration. This dive site is easily accessible from the shore, which adds to its appeal.
