About this dive site
This dive site is the Aiona Wreck (حطام أيونا), possibly the best wreck dive on the Saudi Arabian side of the Red Sea. It's divided into two main sections: a shallower, more accessible area perfect for entry-level divers, and a deeper section with intriguing passages, rooms, and a maximum depth reaching 50 meters, suitable for more experienced divers. Navigation within the wreck requires careful attention to avoid getting disoriented, and proper buoyancy control is essential to navigate the narrow passages safely and avoid damaging the wreck.
Marine life abounds at the Aiona Wreck. Divers can expect to see a wide variety of colorful reef fish, including schools of barracuda. Larger pelagic animals such as hammerhead sharks are also known to frequent this site. The wreck itself provides habitat for various smaller creatures including eels, moray eels, and diverse invertebrates. The surrounding area may also feature vibrant coral formations.
The best time to visit is during the cooler months (November to May) when the water visibility is typically at its best, and the currents are less intense. This site is not recommended for freediving or snorkeling due to its wreck nature and depth. Be sure to check weather and current conditions before heading out. Proper training and certification is recommended for divers attempting the deeper sections of the wreck.
