This dive site, known as the Cable Wreck, is the final resting place of the Greek ship Stavronisos, located off Abu Tair Island in the southwest corner of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The site is characterized by the scattered remnants of its cargo, including massive cables, fences, and steel bundles, which create a unique underwater landscape. Divers can explore the wreck structure and the surrounding debris field, making it an interesting navigation challenge and photographic subject. The maximum depth is 23 meters with an average depth of 11 meters.
The Cable Wreck has become an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Divers can expect to encounter white tip sharks, goatfish, and vibrant blue chromis. Unique to this site are the glowing blue Luma fish, adding a special touch to the underwater ecosystem. The wreck structure itself is colonized by various corals and sponges, providing shelter and feeding grounds for a diverse array of reef fish.
The best time to visit the Cable Wreck generally aligns with the good diving conditions of the Red Sea, typically outside of the hottest summer months (June-August) for comfort, though diving is possible year-round. Divers should be comfortable with wreck environments and mindful of potential currents. Freedivers will find the depths suitable for exploration, enjoying the abundant marine life and the atmospheric wreck.
