About this dive site
This dive site is the wreck of the M.V. Glaros, a 60m diesel refrigerator vessel, nicknamed the 'Chicken Wreck' due to its cargo of frozen chickens. The wreck lies on its side at approximately 20m depth, offering ample exploration opportunities within the ship's structure. It ran aground in 1976, with all crew members safely rescued. Navigating the wreck requires careful attention to depth and potential entanglement hazards within the ship's remains. The masts are now encrusted with soft and hard corals, adding to the visual appeal.
Marine life is abundant around the Chicken Wreck. You can expect to see pipefish, along with a variety of other Red Sea fish species, potentially including larger fish attracted to the wreck. The surrounding area may support other typical reef inhabitants. Soft and hard corals flourish on the masts and potentially other parts of the wreck.
The best time to visit would likely align with the Red Sea's optimal diving conditions, generally during the warmer months. Divers should be aware of potential currents and maintain buoyancy control to avoid damaging the wreck or disturbing the marine life. The site's depth makes it unsuitable for snorkeling or freediving; scuba gear is necessary.
