Channel Rock

About this dive site

This dive site is Channel Rock, a submerged granite reef located east of Praslin Island in the Seychelles, about a 15-25 minute boat ride away depending on weather conditions. At low tide, the highest point of the rock formation nearly breaks the surface. The dive involves navigating around and through the various boulders and crevices that make up this underwater landscape. There's no particular historical significance tied to the site, but its unique geological features offer an interesting dive experience.

Marine life at Channel Rock is diverse, although coral cover is limited. You can expect to see widely spaced colonies of branching Pocillopora coral, as well as encrusting sponges and Tubastrea. Fish life includes butterflyfish and chromis, with a potential for encountering larger fish depending on the season. The rock formations provide habitat for a variety of invertebrates and smaller fish, making it good for macro photography.

The best time to visit is during the dry season (April to October) when visibility is typically better and the seas are calmer. However, currents can still be moderate, so divers should be comfortable navigating these conditions. For freediving, it is recommended to check the currents beforehand and to dive closer to the surface where the currents are weaker. Always dive with a buddy and maintain awareness of your surroundings. This is an excellent site for both scuba diving and snorkeling, offering something to appeal to both beginners and more experienced divers.
