This dive site, HMS Proselyte, is the signature site within the Man of War Shoal Marine Protected Area, located just outside Philipsburg. It is named after the British frigate HMS Proselyte, which ran aground on the shallow reef in September 1801. The site is a fascinating mix of history and natural beauty, featuring numerous old cannons, ballast stones, and anchors scattered amongst the reef structure, along with a gentle small wall. Navigation is straightforward given the shallow average depth and clear landmarks provided by the historical artifacts.
The reef supports a profusion of fish life, making it a vibrant ecosystem. Divers and snorkelers can expect to encounter a wide variety of Caribbean reef fish such as parrotfish, surgeonfish, damselfish, snapper, and grunts. Angelfish are also commonly seen, darting around the healthy hard and soft coral formations that populate the small wall and reef flats.
The HMS Proselyte is suitable for diving and snorkeling year-round, with the dry season (typically December to May) offering generally calmer seas and excellent visibility. Its shallow maximum depth and average depth of 8 meters make it perfect for both beginners learning to dive and experienced divers seeking a relaxed, artifact-rich exploration. Freedivers will also find the conditions ideal for extended bottom time and marine life observation.
