About this dive site
This dive site presents the wreck of the SS Clan Stuart, a 3500-ton British turret steamer that ran aground in 1914. Located approximately 45 degrees to the shoreline and situated in relatively shallow water around 8 meters deep, with maximum depths reaching about 9 meters, this wreck offers a unique dive experience. The ship’s engine block is still prominently visible, rising above the seabed, and sections of its triple expansion steam engine framework remain exposed. The stern lies at approximately 15 meters from the engine block, while the bow is located around 30 meters distant, reaching the deepest point of about 9 meters. The wreck’s iron structure is severely deteriorated, with much of the plating having rusted away, though a considerable amount of framing remains recognizable. A long, angled section of plating forms a low tunnel, extending for many meters, providing an interesting visual element. The surrounding seabed consists primarily of fine sand interspersed with occasional sandstone outcrops. The area supports a moderate diversity of marine life, including invertebrates and fish. Corals and bryozoans are more prevalent inside the wreck than on its exterior, covered by Red bait and coralline algae. Pyjama catsharks, puffadder shy sharks, and occasionally cuttlefish can be spotted. Shoals of white steenbras have been observed, and larger sharks, including great whites that have approached divers, have been documented. It’s important to note that this wreck is protected by legislation, prohibiting disturbance.
