About this dive site
This dive site, Bajo de Piles II Marine Reserve, is a large, elongated rock formation stretching approximately 90 meters from west to east. The varying depths and routes make it suitable for divers of different skill levels, offering an engaging underwater experience for all. Navigation is relatively straightforward, following the natural contours of the rock formation. There's no known historical significance or particular story associated with the site itself beyond its ecological importance as a marine reserve.
The marine life is rich and varied. Large groupers are a highlight, often seen in significant numbers. Other species frequently observed include pollock, mojarras, castanets, fredis, julias, and, during summer months, schools of bogas pursued by dentex and bacoretas. The diversity of fish life, along with the varied topography of the rock formation, creates excellent opportunities for both wide-angle and potentially some macro photography.
The best time to visit is likely during the warmer summer months (June-September) for optimal water temperature and visibility and the chance to witness the aggregations of bogas and their predators. For freedivers, the relatively calm conditions and presence of diverse fish life make it an appealing location, while for scuba divers, the site offers plenty of exploration opportunities with the depth never exceeding 22 meters. However, even with mild currents, good buoyancy control is important to safely navigate the formations.
