About this dive site

This dive site, El Bajón de Alegranza, is located off the coast of Alegranza Island in the Chinijo Archipelago, part of the Canary Islands. The site is characterized by volcanic rock formations creating a dramatic underwater landscape with varied depths, ranging from shallow reefs to deeper drop-offs. Navigation is generally straightforward, following the contours of the volcanic terrain. The site's history is tied to the volcanic activity that shaped the island and the rich marine life that has flourished in its waters for centuries.

The marine life at El Bajón de Alegranza is diverse and abundant. Expect to see a wide variety of fish species, including colourful reef fish, groupers, moray eels, and possibly larger pelagic species like amberjacks. The volcanic rock formations also provide habitats for invertebrates, such as crustaceans, and a variety of coral species adding to the rich ecosystem. The water clarity often allows for excellent visibility, making it suitable for both macro and wide-angle photography.

The best time to visit El Bajón de Alegranza is during the warmer months (spring and summer), when the water temperature is pleasant and the visibility is generally at its best. However, divers and freedivers should be aware of potential moderate currents. Good buoyancy control and experience with navigating in currents are recommended, especially for freedivers. The site's depth also necessitates a good understanding of dive planning and safety procedures. Always dive with a buddy and inform someone of your plans before entering the water.
