About this dive site

This dive site, La Vaca Sud, is a system of tunnels traversing the Medes Islands in Spain. The tunnels, located between 14 and 24 meters, offer a unique underwater experience, but divers should be aware of potential currents that can vary depending on the direction from the north or south. Navigation requires careful attention to avoid getting disoriented within the tunnel system. The site's geological formation, carved by time and currents, adds to its appeal.

The marine life is rich and diverse. Large shoals of damselfish and three tails are common sightings, along with groupers, corvinas (stone bass), and impressive walls of red gorgonia both inside and outside the tunnel. The tunnels provide habitat for a variety of fish and invertebrates, offering plenty of opportunities for observation and photography.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months (spring, summer, and early autumn) when water temperatures are more pleasant and visibility is typically better. While currents are generally moderate, divers should always check local conditions before entering and maintain proper buoyancy and awareness throughout the dive, especially within the tunnels. This dive is not suitable for snorkeling or freediving due to the depth and complexity of the site.
