This dive site, Vrakkyrkogården vid Ekenabben, is a unique underwater wreck graveyard situated in the historical Djupasund strait between Sturkö and Tjurkö, near Karlskrona in southern Sweden. It's a true wreck diver's dream, offering a hauntingly beautiful journey into naval history. With an average depth of approximately 5 meters and a maximum of 11 meters, navigation is generally easy, allowing divers ample time to explore the numerous, often well-preserved, sunken vessels that tell tales of the past.
The wrecks serve as artificial reefs, attracting local marine life such as flounder, cod, and barbel, which can be observed swimming amongst the structures. The site is also a popular fishing ground for cormorants, often seen at the surface and occasionally diving for fish, adding to the natural spectacle.
The best time to experience Vrakkyrkogården is typically during the warmer summer months when water temperatures are milder and sunlight penetrates more effectively, enhancing visibility for wreck exploration. Its shallow nature makes it exceptionally suitable for both snorkeling and freediving, allowing non-scuba enthusiasts to also appreciate the historical remnants. Divers should be aware of potentially variable currents in the strait, though generally mild, and prepare for cold water diving conditions common in Sweden.
