About this dive site

This dive site features the remains of The Great Northern, a British cable-laying ship that sank in Zanzibar on New Year’s Eve 1902. Now resting on the seabed between 4 and 12 meters, this wreck has become a remarkable artificial reef. The shallow depth makes it accessible to both snorkelers and beginner divers, offering an opportunity to explore its fascinating history and underwater environment. For macro photographers, there is a rich diversity of marine life to discover, including various species of shrimps and pipefish. Surrounding the wreck are some of Zanzibar’s most vibrant coral formations, creating a truly stunning spectacle. Be mindful of the anemone fish that fiercely protect their territories. This site provides an excellent introduction to exploring shipwrecks.
