This dive site, Ao Suthep, is the largest bay of Surin Tai Island in Thailand, celebrated as a crucial 'birthplace of coral reefs.' The extensive coral reef stretches for up to 1,200 meters, lying approximately 200-500 meters from the shore. With a maximum depth of 17 meters and an average depth of 8 meters, it offers a shallow, fertile environment perfect for exploration. Divers can navigate by following the reef structure, which is generally accessible by boat.
The bay is exceptionally rich in diverse coral species, including rock coral, rough-surface finger coral, fire coral, blue coral, cauliflower coral, staghorn coral, and table coral, forming vibrant underwater gardens. These healthy coral formations naturally attract a variety of tropical reef fish, crustaceans, and other small marine life typical of the Andaman Sea, though specific large animal sightings are not highlighted.
The best time to visit Ao Suthep for optimal diving and snorkeling conditions is generally during Thailand's dry season, from November to April, when visibility is usually at its peak. This site is highly recommended for beginner divers due to its shallow depths and mild conditions, as well as for snorkelers and freedivers who can easily explore the vibrant reef close to the surface. Its rich coral diversity makes it an excellent spot for macro photography and wide-angle shots of healthy reef ecosystems.
